Released in Japan in 2014, the Gakken Pocket Miku NSX-39 is a compact digital singing synthesiser based around Yamaha’s NSX-1 eVocaloid sound chip and the voice data of virtual singer Hatsune Miku.
Its 16-note printed carbon keyboard is played using a stylus, allowing melodies to be performed through the built-in speaker. Available modes include solfège syllables, selectable Japanese vowel sounds and preset lyrics, with additional controls for vibrato, octave range and volume.
The Pocket Miku can also be connected to a computer by USB for power and MIDI control. Its functions extend beyond the Hatsune Miku voice to include a polyphonic General MIDI sound generator, while lyrics and other parameters can be controlled using compatible software or System Exclusive data.
Connections include USB and a 3.5mm stereo headphone/audio output. Portable operation requires three AAA alkaline batteries. It does not provide conventional five-pin MIDI connections.
