Ortofon SPU GE Vintage Moving Coil Cartridge Elliptical Diamond - Denmark

The Ortofon SPU GE is a vintage low-output moving-coil phono cartridge housed in Ortofon’s integrated G-style headshell. It connects directly to compatible SME-style bayonet tonearms.

Ortofon introduced the original Stereo Pick-Up cartridge in 1959. During the early 1960s, the SPU range used the letter G for its standard integrated headshell and E for its elliptical stylus configuration.

This example has the earlier Ortofon body design and is internally marked “SPU” and “Elliptical Diamond.” The cueing lever is stamped “Made in Denmark,"

The elliptical stylus provides greater groove-wall contact than the spherical version and was intended to offer improved tracking and high-frequency detail. As a low-output moving-coil design, the cartridge requires a suitable MC phono stage or step-up transformer.
