Ortofon SPU GTE Vintage Moving Coil Cartridge W/ Built-In Transformer
The Ortofon SPU GT/E is a vintage moving-coil phono cartridge housed in Ortofon’s distinctive G-style integrated headshell.
The underside is marked SPU-T, identifying it as the transformer-equipped version. Its internal step-up transformers increase the cartridge’s output, allowing it to be connected to a conventional moving-magnet phono input without requiring a separate MC transformer or head amplifier.
This example is also marked Elliptical Diamond, identifying it as the GT/E version with an elliptical stylus. The elliptical profile was designed to provide improved groove contact and high-frequency tracking compared with the standard spherical SPU GT.
Its circular lowercase Ortofon badge, internal transformer arrangement and metal-shell construction identify it as an original old-series model, rather than the later SPU Classic GTE reissue or current GTE 105. It was manufactured in Denmark and uses a standard SME-type bayonet connection.
A desirable original-series SPU combining Ortofon’s classic elliptical moving-coil cartridge with built-in step-up transformers and its distinctive integrated G-style headshell.
