The Rickenbacker 4003S is a streamlined version of the classic 4003 bass, finished here in Rickenbacker’s distinctive Fireglo sunburst.
The 4003S has a solid maple body with rounded, unbound edges, a neck-through maple construction and an unbound rosewood fingerboard with dot position markers. Its 33 1/4-inch scale and 20-fret neck retain the familiar feel and proportions of Rickenbacker’s long-running 4000-series basses.
Two Rickenbacker Hi-Gain single-coil pickups provide the clear upper-mid presence, sustain and treble punch associated with the model. Controls include separate volume and tone adjustments for each pickup, a three-way pickup selector and a push-pull Vintage Tone circuit. The 4003S uses a conventional mono output rather than the stereo Rick-O-Sound system.
The design draws heavily on the stripped-back 4001S and Rose Morris export basses of the 1960s, models closely associated with Paul McCartney and Chris Squire. The lack of body binding and rounded edges also make the 4003S more comfortable against the player than the sharper-edged standard 4003.
A distinctive American-made Rickenbacker bass combining the unmistakable 4000-series sound with the cleaner styling and more comfortable rounded body of the S model.
