The Sony STR-DE845 is a 5.1-channel home-theatre receiver with Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby Pro Logic decoding.

It provides optical and coaxial digital connections, a six-channel analogue input for external surround decoders, a dedicated phono input for a turntable and an AM/FM tuner with 30 station presets. It also includes multiple stereo and video inputs, S-Video switching, a subwoofer output, two front-speaker outputs and a range of Sony Digital Cinema Sound modes.

A solid early-2000s Sony receiver that combines proper 5.1 surround sound with plenty of analogue connections and a useful built-in phono stage.

• Physically this unit is overall in nice condition for its age. It shows some signs of use and age like general marks, nicks and scratches. There is some light surface oxidisation on the top.
